You sound like every other vendor in my inbox
Illustrative exercise for a Sales development representative in Software sales. The buyer and conversation are fictional.
The short answer
Ask which problem would make a conversation useful. If the buyer names manual handoffs, restate that problem and ask whether that workflow is worth discussing.
Read the buyer's next turnBuyer context
A buyer has little reason to spend time on another vendor message. Their team may have a handoff problem, but the rep has not earned that conversation yet.
Two-turn exercise
- Buyer: You sound like every other vendor in my inbox.
- Ask: What about this problem would make a conversation useful?
- Buyer: We are losing time to manual handoffs, not prospecting.
What to listen for
Name the handoff problem the buyer just described. Ask whether a conversation about that workflow would be useful before describing a product.
Keep the line honest: Do not imply you have spoken before or know how their team works.
Review your answer
- Did you find the buyer's actual concern?
- Did your reply use the buyer's second turn?
- Could you verify each factual statement you made?
- Did you leave the decision with the buyer?
- Is the next step clear to both sides?
