How long will the system actually last? HVAC sales
The short answer
Do not promise a number. Say what drives lifespan: how well it is installed, how it is maintained, the climate and the size of the unit. Then separate two things the buyer is mixing up: how long the system should last and what the warranty covers. Put the warranty in writing and offer the maintenance plan.
Take this call against an AI buyerWhy buyers say it
Buyers ask this when they have been quoted a large number. They want to know whether the money buys many years or only a few. The honest answer is not a number, and a rep who dodges it loses the buyer.
How reps lose the deal on it
- They name a long lifespan with no basis. When the system fails early, the rep's word is what the buyer remembers.
- They say "it depends" and stop. The buyer gets no help and no plan.
- They blur warranty and lifespan. The buyer thinks a long parts warranty means repairs paid for as long as it runs.
Stronger lines to say
- “I won’t give you a number I can’t back. What I can tell you is what makes the biggest difference: how it’s installed, how it’s maintained, and whether it’s the right size for the house.”
- “There are two answers here: how long it should last, and what the warranty covers. Let me put the warranty in writing so you can see the difference.”
- “A yearly checkup is the cheapest way to keep it running. Do you want me to show you what the plan covers?”
Questions reps ask about it
Is it wrong to quote an average lifespan?
Only if you cannot support it. If your company or the manufacturer publishes a range, say who says it and what it assumes. Do not turn it into a promise for this house.
Why does the buyer ask about the warranty next?
Because it is the one part of the answer that is written down. Explain what is covered, for how long, and what the buyer must do to keep it valid, such as yearly service. Clarity here earns trust.
Does the size of the unit affect how long it lasts?
Yes. An oversized unit cycles on and off too often and an undersized one runs without rest, and both wear faster. Say that you size from a load calculation on the house, not from the old unit's label. It is a concrete reason your quote may differ.
