Can't you just repair it? HVAC sales answers

Objection guide: HVAC. Updated .

The short answer

Ask before you answer. Find the age of the unit, the repair history and what broke. Then be honest about when a repair still pays and when it stops paying. Offer a technician visit so the buyer sees the evidence. If a repair is the right call, say so. That is how you earn the install later.

Why buyers say it

Replacing a furnace or air conditioner costs far more than the buyer planned, and a repair feels like a way to postpone the bill. The buyer also fears being upsold. Asking for a repair is a test: will this company tell the truth even when it costs them the bigger job?

How reps lose the deal on it

  1. They say "a repair is a waste of money" without knowing the unit's age or what failed. The buyer hears a quota talking.
  2. They lean on fear: "it could die any day." The buyer is already stressed and now feels cornered.
  3. They agree to repair with no word on what the next failure could cost. The buyer comes back later and feels nobody warned them.

Stronger lines to say

  • “Maybe, and I’d rather tell you honestly. How old is the unit, and what’s been fixed on it already?”
  • “A repair makes sense when the part is small and the rest of the system is sound. It stops making sense when you’re fixing one thing every season. I’ll show you which one you’re in.”
  • “Let me send a technician to look. You’ll see what failed, what it costs to fix, and what a replacement would be, so the choice is yours with real facts.”

Questions reps ask about it

How do I bring up refrigerant on an older unit?

Ask the technician what refrigerant it uses. Some older types are no longer produced, and a recharge on those systems costs more each year. State the fact, show the recharge price next to the repair, and let the buyer weigh it. Do not turn it into a scare line.

How do I handle a buyer who refuses a technician visit?

Ask what is holding them back. It may be the diagnostic fee or a bad past visit. Explain what the visit shows and what it costs, in plain words, and offer a time that suits them.

Should I talk about the energy bill when someone wants a repair?

Only with their own numbers. Ask what the summer or winter bills run, then explain that an older unit can use more power for the same comfort. Do not promise a saving. Offer to show what a new unit's rating means for their house once the technician has measured it.
