I need to talk to my spouse first: solar sales

Objection guide: Solar. Updated .

The short answer

Agree, then book the second call before you hang up. Ask when the two of them can be on together for ten minutes this week. Offer to bring the bills and the payback numbers, so the spouse hears the same facts the caller did. Never leave the caller to explain solar to a spouse alone.

Why buyers say it

Solar is a long commitment, and the person on the phone may not be able to answer a spouse's questions alone. Sometimes the spouse really is the harder yes, and sometimes it is a polite way to end the call. Either way, the caller does not yet hold a number they trust.

How reps lose the deal on it

  1. They say "sure, take your time" and send the proposal. Nobody owns the next step, so the proposal sits unread.
  2. They ask the caller to run the numbers past the spouse. The caller repeats half the pitch and gets the hard questions wrong.
  3. They push for a signature tonight or dangle a discount for deciding today. The caller hears pressure, and the spouse hears a trick.

Stronger lines to say

  • “Of course. Your spouse should be in on this. When can the two of you give me ten minutes together, tonight or this weekend?”
  • “Before we hang up, what’s the one question you think your spouse will ask? I’d rather answer it now than leave you to guess.”
  • “I’ll send the bill comparison and the payback numbers so you’re both looking at the same page. Then I’ll call at the time you pick.”

Questions reps ask about it

Should I offer a discount to get both people on the call?

No. A discount for deciding fast reads as pressure. Offer clarity instead: a short second call, the bills on screen, and answers to the spouse's questions. If the price only works tonight, the buyer will wonder why.

How do I handle a spouse who refuses to get on the call?

Do not push. Ask what the spouse would worry about most, then put it in writing: payback, the payment, and what happens if the house sells. Offer a call at a time the spouse picks, or a written summary.

Does the objection change when both spouses are on the first call?

The objection can change shape: now one of them says they need time. Ask each person for the one question they most want answered, and answer the harder one first. Then ask what would need to be true for them to decide together this week.
